PPE at Oxford, and the closest course at Cambridge
Oxford's PPE and History and Politics both use the TARA. Cambridge has no PPE course, so we've included Philosophy, one of the closest options. This is how it works for students who applied in October 2026, for entry in 2027.

How we help
Support for every part of the application
Interview practice
PPE interviews test clear, analytical thinking: how you use what you know, not how much you know. A tutor runs a mock interview with you, puts problems and objections to you, and gives you honest feedback.
The TARA
For next year's applicants. PPE uses all three parts, including the Writing Task. See our TARA page for how the test works and our TARA tutors.

Akseli
Hi, I'm Akseli, a recent PPE graduate from Wadham College, Oxford, where I received a First Class degree and a Scholarship Award in every year of my study. I've tutored Oxford admissions and A-Level Mathematics for two years now. I take an active approach — working through problems alongside you rather than lecturing, so you have a real grasp of every step required.

I've supported several students through Oxford admissions preparation, working on the critical thinking and problem-solving that the TARA now assesses, as well as essay-writing practice for the written task — two of the students I worked on reasoning sections with went on to receive interviews. I've also run interview preparation. I sat Oxford's admissions test myself before the TARA replaced it, and the reasoning skills it tested are exactly what the TARA's Critical Thinking and Problem Solving modules assess. I take a friendly but constructive approach to feedback, and I want to help each student reach their potential.

Youran
Hi! My name is Youran, and I am a 2026 Politics, Philosophy and Economics graduate from Christ Church at the University of Oxford, achieving First Class Honours. I have extensive experience tutoring students between 13 and 18, from introducing Economics to GCSE students — where I achieved 11 A*s — to providing mock interviews and admissions test preparation for Oxford. Having applied to Oxford from Singapore, I'm also familiar with the specific challenges that come with applying internationally.

Over the last three years I've provided mock interviews for PPE and for other subject combinations involving Philosophy or Economics, supported applicants on improving their reasoning-test scores, and run more general sessions on university-level Economics and Philosophy — working with thirteen students in total. I don't know the admissions results of every student I've worked with, but I helped one secure an Oxford PPE offer in 2025. As a tutor I prioritise being flexible and adapting my teaching style to each individual student, to make every session as engaging and useful as possible. I also hope to help students gain a deeper understanding and greater enthusiasm for their subject, alongside improving their grades or securing a place at Oxford. I'm happy to answer any questions about PPE or the application process.

Radha
Hi, I'm Radha, a second-year Philosophy, Politics and Economics student at Pembroke College, University of Oxford. I achieved a Distinction in my Prelims and ranked third in the entire cohort for the Politics paper. Before Oxford I achieved A*A*A*A at A-Level in History, English, Maths and Economics, alongside 10 grade 9s at GCSE. Having gone through the Oxbridge application process myself very recently, I understand how daunting it can feel, and I'm passionate about helping students build the confidence and clarity to put their best selves forward.

I supported two applicants through the Oxbridge admissions process this past cycle, one of whom was offered a place for PPE and the other for History and Economics, both starting in 2026. My support covers the full application journey: helping students explore and refine their subject interest, guiding wider reading around their chosen course, preparing them for the TARA, and working closely on personal statement drafts to help them find their own voice. I run interview practice using realistic Oxbridge-style questioning to build confidence in thinking on your feet and defending an argument under pressure. I have three years of tutoring experience across GCSE Science, English and Maths and A-Level History, English and Economics, and as a Laidlaw Scholar with the Oxford SDG Impact Lab I've developed research and communication skills I bring into every session. My style is patient and student-led — I break PPE's broad, interlinking demands into manageable steps.

Silvia
Hi! I'm Silvia. I'm a PPE graduate from New College, Oxford, and now work at a think tank in Westminster. I have been tutoring for four years now and worked for the Oxford Admissions and Outreach Office in between, so I have an all-round view of what tutors are looking for and what students need to succeed.

I've tutored students in economics, history and politics, and run over twenty mock interview sessions, drawing on resources accumulated over years of tutoring and from speaking to other students and professors about the interview process. I've supported students to places at Russell Group universities including UCL, Durham and Warwick, and coached a student from a B to an A* in maths and politics. My approach is to give all-round support to the student and their family, beyond just the run-up to the interview or admissions test: I genuinely care about my students and I'm available every step of the way, from choosing where to apply, to pre-mock late-night jitters, to post-interview debriefs and everything in between. To me the single biggest variable in an admissions process is the student's approach and confidence — I bring out the best in each student so they can shine in admissions tests and dazzle interviewers.

Questions
PPE admissions FAQs
Is there a PPE course at Cambridge?
No. The closest courses are Human, Social, and Political Sciences (HSPS) for politics, Economics, and Philosophy.
Do I need A-level Maths for PPE?
No, but Oxford recommends it. No subjects are required.
Which parts of the TARA do PPE applicants take?
All three: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and a Writing Task. History and Politics also uses all three.
Do I have to study all three subjects for three years?
No. After your first year you can drop one of philosophy, politics or economics.
How many mock interviews should I book?
We suggest a series of sessions with one tutor, as many as you need, to build your technique. A tutor who knows you can see what you're improving on and take each session further than the last.
Then book one or two sessions with tutors you haven't met. On the day, you'll be interviewed by people you've never spoken to, who ask questions in their own way. Practising with someone new shows you whether your technique holds up when the style and the questions are unfamiliar.
Ready to strengthen your PPE application?
Tell us a little about the course and where you'd like support — interview, the TARA or choosing a course — and we'll get back to you about a tutor who fits. No packages, no obligation.
