What is the LNAT?
The LNAT (Law National Aptitude Test) is used by Oxford, Cambridge and other leading UK law schools to assess applicants for undergraduate Law. It doesn't test legal knowledge — it measures the reading, reasoning and argument skills that law degrees demand, through a multiple-choice section and an essay.
Who takes the LNAT
- Applicants for undergraduate Law degrees
- Required by around 11 universities — including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, KCL, LSE, Bristol, Durham, Nottingham and SOAS
- It assesses aptitude for law, not prior legal knowledge
Format
- Computer-based at a Pearson VUE centre, 2 hours 15 minutes
- Section A: 42 multiple-choice questions on 12 passages, in 95 minutes — scored out of 42 (your "LNAT score"), no negative marking
- Section B: one essay from a choice of three, in 40 minutes
- No calculators or dictionaries
When & how you sit it
- Booking opens 1 August; you book your own slot at a Pearson VUE centre
- Oxford & Cambridge: register and sit by mid-October
- Most other universities: deadlines around late January
- One attempt per admissions cycle
Good to know
- Section A is scored out of 42; for top law schools, the high 20s is competitive
- Section B isn't given a number — admissions tutors read it directly
- Fee around £75 (UK/EU) or £120 elsewhere; bursaries are available if you're eligible
- Preparation is about reading and reasoning, not memorising
Dates, fees and requirements are set by the LNAT consortium and each university and can change between cycles — always check lnat.ac.uk and your chosen universities before you register.

Dorothea
Oxford Law graduate
I'm a recent Law graduate from Oxford with a real passion for helping applicants reach their potential. I scored 28 in the LNAT, and I've guided students through every part of the law application — multiple-choice strategy and essay technique, personal statements, and Oxford-style mock interviews. One of my mentees went on to receive an offer to read Law at Oxford.
I've delivered tailored LNAT preparation to several students — including here on MyOxbridgeTutor — giving detailed feedback on practice essays and multiple-choice strategy, and run tutorial-style sessions on jurisprudence, constitutional and criminal law. Through access and outreach work I've supported many state-school and underrepresented applicants, and I'm experienced at breaking down technical legal ideas into something clear and approachable. I also tutor GCSE History, Maths and English.

Sarah
Oxford Law graduate
Hi! I'm Sarah, a Law graduate from the University of Oxford. I scored 28 in the LNAT, and I take an individualised, student-centred approach — working with you (and your parents) to find the methods that keep you engaged and reaching your potential. I've supported students with their Law applications, from personal statements to entrance-test preparation and admissions interviews.
I've tutored students of all ages and backgrounds in English and Maths, including students with special educational needs and those learning English as a second language. Several of my previous students have been neurodivergent — ADHD and autism — and I adapt my teaching to suit how each student learns best. Alongside the LNAT, I help with Oxford Law interview preparation and personal statement writing.
