No admissions test — but plenty to prepare for
Oxford has discontinued the MLAT, so for 2027 entry there's no written admissions test for Modern Languages. That doesn't mean less to prepare — the weight simply shifts to your written work, your interview, and, at Cambridge, a short language assessment. Here's how each university assesses applicants.
Oxford: assessed at interview
The MLAT has been discontinued. For 2027 entry, Oxford sets no written admissions test for Modern Languages or its joint courses. Your linguistic ability and potential are assessed at interview, alongside your UCAS application and submitted written work.
Cambridge: language assessment at interview
If you're invited to interview at Cambridge, you'll sit a centralised MML language assessment — no pre-registration, your college arranges it. It's a one-hour written task on a set passage: a piece written in your target language (weighted most heavily) and a response in English.
Written work & interview
Both universities ask for submitted written work — Cambridge wants two recent pieces, one in a language you'll study — and both lean heavily on interview. Expect to discuss texts, your wider reading, and to converse in your language. This is where most of the assessment really happens.

I'm a recent Cambridge graduate in Modern and Medieval Languages — First Class with distinction, ranked fourth across the languages faculty and winner of the Peter Bayley Prize for the best performance in French. I sat the Cambridge MML admissions assessment in French and German myself, so I know exactly what it asks for and how to prepare for it.
I have over 100 hours of tutoring experience across GCSE and A-Level humanities, and I've supported students through their Oxbridge applications. I aim to create an open, friendly environment where students enjoy the work and start to develop a sophisticated, distinctive voice in their writing.

Cambridge Modern Languages (French & Spanish)
I graduated from Downing College, Cambridge in Modern Languages (French and Spanish), after Eton. I tutor French and Spanish from GCSE to Pre-U, and coach students preparing for Oxbridge and other competitive university applications. My teaching builds the core of each syllabus — secure grammar, precise and flexible vocabulary, and the confidence to perform across reading, writing, listening and speaking.
I've worked with several students on their Oxbridge applications, primarily prospective linguists but also English applicants, supporting personal statements, wider reading, essay writing, essay competitions and interview preparation — a holistic approach to what can be a daunting process. Language learning is about more than accuracy: especially at A-Level and Pre-U, engaging with literature, film and wider culture matters, and that cultural awareness is exactly what strengthens an Oxbridge application. I help students explore the diversity of the French and Spanish-speaking worlds, from Latin America to francophone Africa, and find the academic interests they can express clearly in a personal statement and at interview.

I'm the recipient of Hertford College's subject prize for the best Modern Languages Finals results in my cohort. Cambridge Modern & Medieval Languages — Caius Scholar
I'm a Modern and Medieval Languages student at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, with four years' tutoring experience across GCSE and A-Level subjects. I achieved four A*s at A-Level and a First in my first year at Cambridge, winning me the opportunity to become a Caius Scholar. Coming from a UK state school I always felt at a disadvantage when applying to Cambridge — it's my goal for every one of my students to achieve their full potential and gain a place at their dream university.
I've supported students with several aspects of the university admissions process, particularly personal statements, mock interviews and admissions test preparation — reviewing and editing statements to improve structure, clarity, academic focus and how well they communicate genuine interest in the subject, and running mock interview sessions focused on thinking aloud, responding to unfamiliar questions and explaining reasoning clearly. This year I took part in the training of new Cambridge interviewers as their 'example candidate', which gave me unusual insight into what humanities interviewers are actually looking for. I sat Cambridge's MML admissions assessment myself and was told on receiving my offer that I had performed especially strongly, gaining a place at my first-choice college. As a schools outreach ambassador I'm familiar with the Cambridge application process and enjoy helping prospective students feel more informed and confident.

I'm studying French and Spanish at Oxford, after achieving the maximum 45 points in the IB diploma and a grade 9 in every GCSE. I sat the MLAT for my own Oxford application and have tutored both the MLAT and language interviews, so I can guide applicants through exactly what languages admissions now involves.
I've tutored for three years, teaching French and Spanish from KS3 to A-Level and IB. My approach is flexible and collaborative — I get to know how each student learns, prepare varied materials to keep sessions engaging, and recap and consolidate before moving on. I often plan the next lesson together with the student around what's working for them.

Hi, I'm Archie, a third-year undergraduate reading History and Spanish at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. My one-to-one experience includes supporting three students from my sixth form to Oxbridge offers — for English and Spanish at Oxford, French and Spanish at Oxford, and History at Cambridge. With each I ran interview-style questioning around their personal statement and their approach to the subject, drawing on my own Cambridge application and the parts I found hardest, especially pushing thinking beyond what's written on the page. I've also led study sessions at my college for groups of up to eighteen prospective applicants, adapting to the numbers and reinforcing what actually makes an application work. Alongside this I've helped in classrooms from reception through to sixth form.

I'm studying French and Classics at The Queen's College, Oxford, having obtained three As in Latin, Ancient Greek and French at A-level after all grade 9s at GCSE. I sat Oxford's French admissions test myself, scoring 88%, so I know what a languages application asks of you. As a recent secondary school student myself, I believe that I am best placed to relate to my students — I understand the challenges and stresses of school life, and I aim for a teaching approach that is both personal and practical.
My success in public examinations was in large part due to strong study, revision and exam techniques, and I aim to teach these to my students — including all the tips and tricks that are commonly overlooked. I am intensely passionate about my subjects and can only hope that this passion is infectious. My areas of interest lie in linguistics, particularly the development of late Latin into early French, and the reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European — about which I wrote an essay that was Highly Commended in the Fitzwilliam College Cambridge Ancient World and Classics Essay Competition 2024. During my time at school I mentored students applying for Modern Languages or Classics at Oxbridge, and helped one secure a Cambridge offer for French and Italian in 2025.
