Three ways to study physics, one test

Every course here uses the ESAT. At Cambridge, you study physics through Natural Sciences. This is how it works for students who applied in October 2026, for entry in 2027.

Cambridge

Natural Sciences (for Physics)

What you studyThree sciences plus maths in your first year, then you narrow down until you can specialise in Physics.
TestThe ESAT: Mathematics 1, plus any two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2. Choose modules that match your A-levels. Our ESAT page
Subjects you needMaths plus two other sciences or maths subjects. For first-year Physics, you need A-level Physics or Further Maths (including mechanics).
Typical offerA*A*A at A-level, or 41–42 points in the IB with 776 at Higher Level.
Interview7–18 December 2026, online or in person, depending on the college.

Oxford

Physics

What you studyCore physics and the maths it uses, usually as a four-year MPhys. A three-year BA is also possible.
TestThe ESAT: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics. Oxford chooses who to interview using your ESAT score alongside your UCAS application. Our ESAT page

Interview practice

Physics interviews are purely academic. A tutor guides you through an unfamiliar maths or physics problem, just like the real thing, and shows you how to use hints well.

The ESAT

For next year's applicants. See our ESAT page for how the test works and our ESAT tutors.

Hi, I'm William, a Cambridge Physics MSci graduate specialising in theoretical and computational physics. I achieved First-Class results in both my Natural Sciences BA and Physics MSci, ranking second in the Cambridge Physics cohort. In my master's year I averaged over 90% across all modules and received 97% for my final thesis, alongside multiple scholarships and prizes. I support students with ESAT Physics and Maths preparation, entrance-test problem solving, Oxbridge-style interviews, and broader university admissions preparation for Physics, Natural Sciences and related courses.

I support students preparing for the ESAT Physics and Maths modules, Cambridge Natural Sciences and Physics applications, A-Level Further Maths, and advanced problem-solving beyond the standard school syllabus. My teaching focuses on fast, accurate reasoning, clear physical intuition and genuine understanding — helping students see not just how to reach an answer, but why the method works, so they can build the confidence and intuition needed for unfamiliar problems. Through outreach and admissions-related work with the Cambridge Physics Department, alongside prize-winning academic talks and presentations, I've developed a clear and structured approach to explaining demanding physics in an accessible way.

Hi! I'm Mali, a Physics undergraduate at Oxford. I represented the UK at the International Physics Olympiad in 2023, and I now help with the British Physics Olympiad — assisting at physics camps and writing competition questions — so I know exactly how to build the problem-solving instinct the ESAT rewards. I've tutored Maths and Physics for three years, guiding A-Level students all the way to their exams.

I sat Oxford's Physics Aptitude Test, scoring 88/100 — the ESAT now assesses the same physics and maths problem-solving, so it's exactly the ground I cover. Alongside three years of A-Level tutoring (Edexcel and AQA), I've mock-interviewed applicants at outreach events and spent three years helping at physics camps, running sessions and coaching problem-solving for students from GCSE to A-Level. I love showing students how to approach unfamiliar problems with confidence.

Hi, I'm Eleanor, a Physics undergraduate at the University of Oxford with a particular interest in astronomy and astrophysics, and Distinctions in both my first and second-year exams. Having been through the Oxbridge application myself, I help students prepare for the ESAT, admissions and interviews — building not just technical skill but the confidence and problem-solving instinct these tests reward. I'm friendly and dedicated, and I tailor every session to the student in front of me.

I've tutored online for two years, teaching Physics and Maths at A-Level and GCSE across AQA and Edexcel, and I currently coach a student for the ESAT. I've also mentored applicants from my old school through their personal statements and applications. I have a strong competition background: as well as Top Gold in the British Physics Olympiad and reaching the national finals of the UK Astronomy & Astrophysics Olympiad, I competed in the national finals of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge — exactly the kind of unfamiliar, high-pressure problem-solving the ESAT is built around. I sat Oxford's physics admissions process the year before I started my degree, so I know first-hand what it asks of you.

Hello, I'm Danny, a third-year Physics student at the University of Oxford. Before my degree I achieved four D1s — the A**-equivalent top grade in the Pre-U — in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, alongside straight A*s at GCSE. My degree has sharpened my high-level maths and problem-solving across areas like quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism, and tackling such demanding problems from many different angles is exactly what I bring to my tutoring — because every student needs their own way of understanding a subject.

I sat the PAT for my own Oxford application, and I have real experience with both PAT and ESAT preparation as well as Oxford Physics and Engineering interviews — the physics and maths problem-solving is the same ground the ESAT now covers. I'm an experienced tutor and I've enjoyed teaching A-Level Maths and Further Maths, Oxbridge Physics applications, and GCSE and 11+ students too. Every student needs a different approach and pace, and I'm determined to help you reach your goals.

I'm a recent graduate of the University of Cambridge (Selwyn College), where I studied Natural Sciences, specialising in Astrophysics, for my BA and MSci. Having achieved four A*s at A-level and ten grade 9s at GCSE, I understand both the academic demands of science and maths subjects and the challenges students face in studying them. I sat Cambridge's science admissions assessment — the test the ESAT replaced — and was told I came in the top 15% of candidates.

During several years' experience mentoring and teaching, I've supported prospective Oxbridge applicants through mock interviews and delivered Cambridge-style supervisions on summer schools, helping students develop both subject knowledge and confidence. As a student ambassador for Selwyn College across four years, I sat on a panel for student Q&As and admissions workshops, helped with talks from admissions tutors on what they're looking for in a personal statement or interview candidate, and looked after candidates during the interviews and admissions tests themselves — advising hundreds of applicants along the way. My teaching is inspired by the supervision-style learning I experienced at Cambridge: discussion-based sessions, solving problems together, and marking work with real feedback. I also communicate complex scientific ideas to audiences of all ages, through volunteering with Cambridge Hands On Science and now as a Live Science Presenter at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Questions

Physics admissions FAQs

Can I study Physics at Cambridge?

Yes, through Natural Sciences. Apply for Physical Sciences, take a broad first year, then specialise in Physics.

Which ESAT modules do I take?

For Oxford Physics, and Physics and Philosophy: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2 and Physics. For Cambridge Natural Sciences: Mathematics 1, plus any two others that match your A-levels.

How does Oxford choose who to interview?

Using your ESAT score alongside your UCAS application, including information about your school and background.

What happens in a physics interview?

A tutor guides you through a problem, mostly maths and physics. Mistakes are expected. Careful reasoning and using hints well count for more than the final answer. Interview problems often build on the maths and physics you've covered for the ESAT.

How many mock interviews should I book?

We suggest a series of sessions with one tutor, as many as you need, to build your technique. A tutor who knows you can see what you're improving on and take each session further than the last.

Then book one or two sessions with tutors you haven't met. On the day, you'll be interviewed by people you've never spoken to, who ask questions in their own way. Practising with someone new shows you whether your technique holds up when the style and the questions are unfamiliar.

Ready to strengthen your Physics application?

Tell us a little about the course and where you'd like support — interview, the ESAT or choosing a course — and we'll get back to you about a tutor who fits. No packages, no obligation.
