Which route, which test

One course, two routes, one test

Natural Sciences is Cambridge's course for the sciences. You choose the Physical or the Biological route when you apply, but you can mix subjects in your first year. This is how it works for students who applied in October 2026, for entry in 2027.

Cambridge

Natural Sciences: Physical

What you studyIn your first year, three sciences plus Mathematics for Physical Sciences. Later you can specialise, for example in Physics, Chemistry, Astrophysics, Earth Sciences or Materials Science.

How we help

Support for every part of the application

Interview practice

Natural Sciences interviews are academic. A tutor gives you unfamiliar problems in your sciences and helps you think them through out loud, just like the real thing.

The ESAT

For next year's applicants. See our ESAT page for how the test works and our ESAT tutors.

Choosing your route

Physical or Biological, and which first-year subjects? A tutor who studied Natural Sciences can talk you through the choices.

Hi, I'm Aaron, a First Class Natural Sciences graduate from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, specialising in Oxbridge admissions and the biological and physical sciences. My Cambridge interview went well enough that my interviewer offered me a job in his research lab, where I've since worked closely alongside him. That has given me an insider's understanding of how interviewers actually think and what makes a candidate stand out.

I have over 150 hours of tutoring experience across admissions preparation, A-Levels, GCSEs, and even first-year undergraduate courses. I hold Gold awards in both the Physics and Biology Olympiads and placed in the 95th percentile in the biology section of Cambridge's science admissions assessment — the test the ESAT replaced — so I understand what these assessments demand and how to prepare for them. I've run many of my own mock interviews and have conducted real interviews in a previous role, and I've supported applicants for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Natural Sciences. My approach is direct and tailored: I break problems down to first principles, prioritise reasoning over rote answers, and adapt each session to how you actually learn. Whether you're chasing top grades, a Natural Sciences place, or the confidence to excel at interview, I'd be glad to help.

I'm a recent graduate of the University of Cambridge (Selwyn College), where I studied Natural Sciences, specialising in Astrophysics, for my BA and MSci. Having achieved four A*s at A-level and ten grade 9s at GCSE, I understand both the academic demands of science and maths subjects and the challenges students face in studying them. I sat Cambridge's science admissions assessment — the test the ESAT replaced — and was told I came in the top 15% of candidates.

During several years' experience mentoring and teaching, I've supported prospective Oxbridge applicants through mock interviews and delivered Cambridge-style supervisions on summer schools, helping students develop both subject knowledge and confidence. As a student ambassador for Selwyn College across four years, I sat on a panel for student Q&As and admissions workshops, helped with talks from admissions tutors on what they're looking for in a personal statement or interview candidate, and looked after candidates during the interviews and admissions tests themselves — advising hundreds of applicants along the way. My teaching is inspired by the supervision-style learning I experienced at Cambridge: discussion-based sessions, solving problems together, and marking work with real feedback. I also communicate complex scientific ideas to audiences of all ages, through volunteering with Cambridge Hands On Science and now as a Live Science Presenter at the Royal Observatory Greenwich.

Hi, I'm William, a Cambridge Physics MSci graduate specialising in theoretical and computational physics. I achieved First-Class results in both my Natural Sciences BA and Physics MSci, ranking second in the Cambridge Physics cohort. In my master's year I averaged over 90% across all modules and received 97% for my final thesis, alongside multiple scholarships and prizes. I support students with ESAT Physics and Maths preparation, entrance-test problem solving, Oxbridge-style interviews, and broader university admissions preparation for Physics, Natural Sciences and related courses.

I support students preparing for the ESAT Physics and Maths modules, Cambridge Natural Sciences and Physics applications, A-Level Further Maths, and advanced problem-solving beyond the standard school syllabus. My teaching focuses on fast, accurate reasoning, clear physical intuition and genuine understanding — helping students see not just how to reach an answer, but why the method works, so they can build the confidence and intuition needed for unfamiliar problems. Through outreach and admissions-related work with the Cambridge Physics Department, alongside prize-winning academic talks and presentations, I've developed a clear and structured approach to explaining demanding physics in an accessible way.

Questions

Natural Sciences admissions FAQs

Should I apply for the Physical or the Biological route?

You choose when you apply, and your interview questions follow that choice. Cambridge says the Physical route is best if you've studied Physics and Maths. In your first year you can still mix physical and biological subjects, as long as the timetable allows.

Which ESAT modules do I take?

Mathematics 1, plus two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics 2. Choose the modules that match the subjects you study.

Can I study Physics, Chemistry or Biology at Cambridge?

Yes, through Natural Sciences. You take a broad first year, then narrow down. By your third year you can specialise in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics or Zoology.

Do I need to send written work?

Not usually. Cambridge says Natural Sciences applicants won't usually be asked for written work.

How many mock interviews should I book?

We suggest a series of sessions with one tutor, as many as you need, to build your technique. A tutor who knows you can see what you're improving on and take each session further than the last.

Then book one or two sessions with tutors you haven't met. On the day, you'll be interviewed by people you've never spoken to, who ask questions in their own way. Practising with someone new shows you whether your technique holds up when the style and the questions are unfamiliar.

Ready to strengthen your Natural Sciences application?

Tell us your route and where you'd like support — interview, the ESAT or choosing your subjects — and we'll get back to you about a tutor who fits. No packages, no obligation.
