How we help
Support for every part of the application
Interview practice
Biology interviews often use something real: a diagram, a graph, a short data set, or even a specimen. A tutor runs a mock interview like this and gives you honest feedback.
The ESAT (Cambridge)
For next year's applicants. See our ESAT page for how the test works and our ESAT tutors.
Choosing a course
Biology, Biochemistry, Natural Sciences or Biomedical Sciences? A tutor can talk you through how they differ.

Aminah
I graduated from Oxford with a Bachelor's and First Class Master's in Biology, and I'm now a PhD researcher in biology, working with AI and bioinformatics. I scored 44/45 in the IB with straight 7s, and I've spent five years tutoring Biology and Chemistry from GCSE to A-Level and IB — so I know the ESAT's Biology and Chemistry content inside out.

Alongside subject tuition, I've supported Biology applicants through admissions for the past three years — running personal statement workshops and mock interviews, and helping students show genuine passion for the subject. Three of my students have gone on to study Biology at Oxford. In my research role I also teach genomics to Master's students, so I'm used to making complex ideas click. I like to weave exam-style questions into every session so you build both content and technique.

Benjamin
Hey! My name is Ben and I'm in my second year studying Biology at Jesus College, Oxford. I achieved three A*s at A-Level, as well as a prize for excellence in my first-year university exams. I like to keep my sessions interactive and targeted, with plenty of discussion time, creativity and detailed feedback to help craft and refine an outstanding application.

As a state school-educated Oxford insider who has excelled in the tutorial system, I understand exactly what tutors are looking for in an Oxbridge candidate, whatever a student's background. I've been helping students through the admissions process for over a year, since I first received my own offer — supporting students at my former sixth form and in the local area with super-curricular advice, personal statement feedback and interview practice, using questions I designed myself to mirror the style of real interviews. I've helped students secure offers for Biomedical Science at Oxford, Music at Oxford, and Psychology at Cambridge.

Aaron
Hi, I'm Aaron, a First Class Natural Sciences graduate from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, specialising in Oxbridge admissions and the biological and physical sciences. My Cambridge interview went well enough that my interviewer offered me a job in his research lab, where I've since worked closely alongside him. That has given me an insider's understanding of how interviewers actually think and what makes a candidate stand out.

I have over 150 hours of tutoring experience across admissions preparation, A-Levels, GCSEs, and even first-year undergraduate courses. I hold Gold awards in both the Physics and Biology Olympiads and placed in the 95th percentile in the biology section of Cambridge's science admissions assessment — the test the ESAT replaced — so I understand what these assessments demand and how to prepare for them. I've run many of my own mock interviews and have conducted real interviews in a previous role, and I've supported applicants for Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Natural Sciences. My approach is direct and tailored: I break problems down to first principles, prioritise reasoning over rote answers, and adapt each session to how you actually learn. Whether you're chasing top grades, a Natural Sciences place, or the confidence to excel at interview, I'd be glad to help.

Questions
Biology admissions FAQs
Do Oxford Biology and Biochemistry have a test?
No. Neither has an admissions test or written work.
How do I study Biology at Cambridge?
Through Natural Sciences. Apply for Biological Sciences, take a broad first year, then specialise.
Do I need A-level Biology?
For Oxford Biology, yes. For Oxford Biochemistry, no: you need Chemistry instead. For Cambridge Natural Sciences, it's recommended for the biology options.
What happens in a biology interview?
You may be asked to comment on a diagram or image, or to interpret a graph, a short passage or a simple data set. Oxford's published examples include explaining what a real specimen's features are for. Tutors care more about how you think than about getting the right answer.
How many mock interviews should I book?
We suggest a series of sessions with one tutor, as many as you need, to build your technique. A tutor who knows you can see what you're improving on and take each session further than the last.
Then book one or two sessions with tutors you haven't met. On the day, you'll be interviewed by people you've never spoken to, who ask questions in their own way. Practising with someone new shows you whether your technique holds up when the style and the questions are unfamiliar.
Ready to strengthen your Biology application?
Tell us a little about the course and where you'd like support — interview, the ESAT or choosing a course — and we'll get back to you about a tutor who fits. No packages, no obligation.
