What is the TARA?
The TARA (Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions) is a new UAT-UK admissions test used by Oxford (from 2027 entry, replacing the TSA) and UCL (from 2026 entry). It assesses how you think — critical reasoning, problem solving and written argument — not subject knowledge.
Oxford courses requiring the TARA
- Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE)
- Economics & Management
- History & Economics
- History & Politics
- Human Sciences
- Experimental Psychology
- Psychology, Philosophy & Linguistics (PPL)
UCL also uses the TARA for Computer Science and a range of social-science courses. Always check your course page, as requirements can change.

What happened to the TSA?
From 2027 entry, the TARA replaces the TSA at Oxford. The good news for anyone who'd already started preparing: the Critical Thinking and Problem Solving sections test the same reasoning skills, so TSA past papers and practice materials remain some of the best preparation you can do.

Akseli
Oxford PPE — First Class
Hi, I'm Akseli, a recent PPE graduate from Wadham College, Oxford, where I received a First Class degree and a Scholarship Award in every year of my study. I've tutored Oxford admissions and A-Level Mathematics for two years now. I take an active approach — working through problems alongside you rather than lecturing, so you have a real grasp of every step required.
I've supported several students through Oxford admissions preparation, working on the critical thinking and problem-solving that the TARA now assesses, as well as essay-writing practice for the written task — two of the students I worked on reasoning sections with went on to receive interviews. I've also run interview preparation. I sat Oxford's admissions test myself before the TARA replaced it, and the reasoning skills it tested are exactly what the TARA's Critical Thinking and Problem Solving modules assess. I take a friendly but constructive approach to feedback, and I want to help each student reach their potential.

Radha
Oxford PPE — Pembroke College
Hi, I'm Radha, a second-year Philosophy, Politics and Economics student at Pembroke College, University of Oxford. I achieved a Distinction in my Prelims and ranked third in the entire cohort for the Politics paper. Before Oxford I achieved A*AAA at A-Level in History, English, Maths and Economics, alongside 10 grade 9s at GCSE. Having gone through the Oxbridge application process myself very recently, I understand how daunting it can feel, and I'm passionate about helping students build the confidence and clarity to put their best selves forward.
I supported two applicants through the Oxbridge admissions process this past cycle, one of whom was offered a place for PPE and the other for History and Economics, both starting in 2026. My support covers the full application journey: helping students explore and refine their subject interest, guiding wider reading around their chosen course, preparing them for the TARA, and working closely on personal statement drafts to help them find their own voice. I run interview practice using realistic Oxbridge-style questioning to build confidence in thinking on your feet and defending an argument under pressure. I have three years of tutoring experience across GCSE Science, English and Maths and A-Level History, English and Economics, and as a Laidlaw Scholar with the Oxford SDG Impact Lab I've developed research and communication skills I bring into every session. My style is patient and student-led — I break PPE's broad, interlinking demands into manageable steps.

Ollie
Oxford PPE — Third Year
Third-year Oxford PPE student. I scored 81.9 on TSA Critical Thinking — one mark off full marks — and tutor Economics A-Level, personal statements, and TSA/TARA preparation, including the essay task.
I've been tutoring for three years, primarily A-Level Economics along with Maths, Further Maths and History. My PPE degree specialises in economics and politics — both highly applicable to the TARA, and the essay is well-suited to my experience with broad PPE essay questions. I got straight 9s at GCSE and 3A* and an A at A-Level (plus 99% in my EPQ), so you're in safe hands. I'm patient and work at your pace. In my spare time I play for the University 1st XI Hockey and Cricket teams.

Isabelle
Oxford Economics & Management
Hi everyone! I'm Isabelle, and I'm studying Economics and Management at the University of Oxford. I scored 84 in TSA Critical Thinking and as well as securing an offer from Oxford, received offers from all five of my UCAS choices, including LSE and Warwick. Alongside the TARA, I can also support TMUA preparation, and I love helping students build genuine confidence and tailor my approach to how they learn best.
I achieved four A-Levels (two A*s, two As) and an EPQ, and I've tutored students from KS3 through to A-Level in Maths and Chemistry, as well as mentoring Year 12 students in Chemistry. Outside academics I competed in regional hockey and cricket through school and now row at Oxford — so I know first-hand what it takes to balance serious academic work with other commitments, and how to help students manage their time to do the same.
