Oxbridge Maths Admissions
Maths Admissions Tutoring & PreparationTMUA & STEP — for Oxford, Cambridge & beyond
Applying for Maths can mean two different tests at two different stages. We'll show you exactly which you need — then connect you with tutors who've sat and aced them.
Which test do I need?Which test do I need?
Two tests, two stages
Maths admissions can involve two separate tests taken at different points in the cycle. The TMUA helps decide who gets shortlisted for interview; STEP appears later as a condition of your offer. Some applicants take one — some take both.
TMUA
Test of Mathematics for University Admission
A pre-application test universities use to help decide who to invite for interview. Sat in October, before any offers are made.
- Maths, Economics & Computer Science applicants
- Cambridge, Oxford (2027 entry), Imperial, LSE, Warwick & UCL
- Taken once per cycle — Oxbridge applicants sit the October date
STEP
Sixth Term Examination Paper
A harder, written exam that forms part of your conditional offer — sat the following summer alongside your A-levels, not before you apply.
- Cambridge Maths offers (usually STEP 2 and 3)
- Some Warwick & Imperial Maths offers
- Aimed at roughly the top 5% of A-level Maths candidates
Applying for Cambridge Maths? You need both.
You'll sit the TMUA in October to be shortlisted for interview, and — if you receive an offer — STEP 2 and 3 the following June as the condition of that offer. They test different skills at different stages, so both deserve dedicated preparation.
Test requirements vary by university, course and year, and can change between cycles. Always confirm the current requirements on the official Oxford, Cambridge and individual university course pages before you apply.
